The Pathamudaya Pongala Mahotsavam at Singarathoppu Sree Durga Devi Thamburan Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching festivals in Kerala. Celebrated over three days, this festival draws devotees from all over to participate in sacred rituals, cultural programs and community offerings. The festival begins with the installation of Sri Kanakadurga Devi and Sri Bhadrakali Devi, performed with traditional Kappu Kettu rituals to invoke divine protection. Devotees actively participate in the Pongala offering, a special ritual where women cook sweet rice and offer it to the goddess as a symbol of devotion.
Throughout the festival, there are numerous ceremonial events, including Alankara Deepa Aradhana, special poojas for Sri Dharmashastha and Sri Murugan Swami, and the Shakti Pooja for Yakshiyamma. Community Annadanam (sacred food offerings) is organized on each day, allowing devotees to partake in the joy of giving. The final day features elaborate floral decorations and a procession of the deities, accompanied by traditional music and devotional programs.
