The Ashtabandha Navikaranam and Sahasrakalasha Abhishekam at Aazhimala Shiva Temple, Thiruvananthapuram, is a highly sacred and rare temple ritual conducted once in twelve years. This grand spiritual event will be held from 25 April 2026 to 1 May 2026, corresponding to 1201 Medam 12 to Medam 18 in the Malayalam calendar.
The Ashtabandha Navikaranam is a traditional consecration process where the temple deity’s idol is re-energized using sacred herbal and mineral compounds, ensuring spiritual purity and divine energy restoration. Alongside this, the Sahasrakalasha Abhishekam is performed with thousands of consecrated pots filled with holy water and ritual substances, symbolizing purification and divine blessings.
During the festival days, various Vedic rituals such as homams, archanas, special poojas, and devotional offerings are conducted by learned priests with active participation from devotees. The atmosphere of the temple during this period becomes deeply spiritual, filled with chants, music and sacred vibrations. The concluding rituals on 1 May 2026 include the final abhishekam, special poojas and mass annadanam marking the divine completion of this rare temple renovation ceremony. Devotees believe that participating in this event brings prosperity, spiritual upliftment and divine grace from Lord Shiva.
