The annual Thiruvutsavam at Thiruvarppu Sree Krishna Swami Temple in Kottayam, Kerala is one of the most cherished religious celebrations in the region. This sacred festival, traditionally held in the month of Medam (April–May) each year, marks a period of deep devotion, vibrant rituals and rich cultural expressions. The festival typically spans ten days beginning with the ceremonial Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) that officially inaugurates the festivities and invokes divine blessings. During the festival period, devotees from across Kerala and beyond gather at the temple on the banks of the Meenachil River, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere filled with chants, poojas and offerings to Lord Krishna who is worshipped here in a unique four-armed form.
One of the most enchanting experiences of the Thiruvutsavam is the procession of young girls dressed as Lord Krishna, carrying traditional lamps in the morning and evening symbolizing purity and devotion. Devotees also witness the elephant race, a popular celebration reflecting Kerala’s temple heritage. The festival concludes with the sacred Aarattu ,the ritual bath of the deity, accompanied by music, traditional percussion and community participation leaving devotees with profound spiritual memories and blessings.
